About this place

ONLY OPEN FRIDAYS FOR SUMMER MONTHS.

First-time visitors to Abe and Jake's might think they just walked into Allen Fieldhouse due to the immense space inside. If bars were dinosaurs, A&J's would be a megasaurus.

Abe and Jake's sits on the north edge of Downtown Lawrence where Mass. St. meets the Kansas River.

Two huge bars. A cozy pub. A spacious patio looking out on the river.

There are also several pool tables and dart boards scattered around the many tiers inside. Two huge bars. A fountain. A sculpture toad thing.

Oh yeah, and there's a huge stage that has seen the likes of Vanilla Ice and Color me Badd (and less popular acts like John Mayer, Blues Traveler, The Roots, Karl Denson, and Maroon5).

The building that houses the current business began its life in the 1880s as the Consolidated Barbed Wire Company. In its prime, over 300 employees kept the building buzzing. Over the years, it went through several hands, housing many different businesses until it was semi-abandoned in the 1980s. The building quickly fell into disrepair until it was purchased by its current ownership who spent almost ten years restoring and remodeling the inside. Today, it houses one of the premier live music venues in the Midwest.

This is a really neat bar that is poorly run. As we were in line to get carded, we watched one of the bouncers 'palm' a fake ID to three seperate individuals who were his friends that were clearly under-age. It seems like if someone from management was paying attention AT ALL then this wouldn't happen. This place needs to be careful so that they are not shut down for serving to minors - it happens all the time. Also, from the comments above it looks like they are losing patrons because of the rude and unacceptable service. I hope they figure out how to run this place better so that people can enjoy going there.

Abe&Jakes.
A awesome bar doing all the wrong things. This bar COULD be the best bar in town if it was ran right and had the right people working there.
Better get it together before its to late.

I ran into the same type of problems at Abe and Jake's. The bartenders were rude, the doormen and bouncers were assholes, and everything just plain sucked. The only reason I went there was to see Son Venezula and The Shop, both of which were very excellent bands. I see no other reason to step into this place. The staff has been rude and hateful since that place opened. Don't go there.

A group of us went to Abe and Jakes to listen to Son Venezuala. Are group consisted of more than eight people, which it normally does when this awesome band plays. This evening, the group spent some money on drinks: shots, mixed drinks, and beer. At 130 the music stopped. Everyone was starting to clear out as we were paying are tab. The bouncer told our group to start clearing out which we began to get out of the booth where he came right back and began to cuss at us to " Get the fuck out of here you motherfuckers." Also he called the ladies at the table "bitches." This is uncalled for. I dont believe that anyone deserves to be treated like this especially when you are a customer. As you can see from the rating of this bar, i will never step back in this bar.

Oh yeah, as we were leaving, the new bouncer wanted to show more of his power by yelling more negative things to our group as we did NOTHING.

Like i said, this behavior of the new bouncer is uncalled for. I have never been in a club/bar setting where anyone has ever said anything like this to me, or any of the people i am with. Abe and jakes is a nice bar, but until they get this negative energy out of there, this bar is complete trash.
